Intel Family Science Workshop Gets Results

Early in 2005, a six-hour training workshop for elementary teachers from three Hillsboro schools was held at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve in Hillsboro, OR. Sarah Pinnock, Jackson Bottom workshop organizer, recently sent FFS the following message:
Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve has incorporated the Family Science program as a component of a grant received from the Intel Corporation because we feel it is such a valuable tool for introducing science to children of all ages and for making a connection with members of the Hispanic community that can be difficult to contact.
FFS collaborating with Washington State University Vancouver (WSUV)

A new initiate at WSUV to establish a Center for Youth Workforce Preparation is including the FFS in its planning. The Center is collaboration between Washington State University Vancouver, Washington State University Extension, Washington State 4-H and other community partners to provide informal education for youth and adults in youth workforce preparation. Helping prepare K-12 students and families to make decisions regarding post high school education and careers in the primary goal of the Center.

The mission of the Center is based on the Secretary of Labor's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Report, and encourages programs and curricula development for all age groups, emphasizes helping youth develop competencies and skills critical to employment and entrepreneurial ventures, and offers opportunities in the transition from school to work in eight phases starting with pre-school children and continuing through adulthood.
